![]() Honoring the Past - Planning for the FutureFor quite sometime the City of Brockton has been involved with an ongoing effort to repair, refurbish and restore the War Memorial Building at 156 West Elm Street in downtown Brockton. Recently it has been decided to proceed with an expanded, comprehensive plan to save this historic, architectural treasure for the use and benefit of all of the citizens of Brockton. This effort is being referred to as the War Memorial Restoration Project. Initially proposed and advanced by former Mayor John Yunits and supported by the Brockton City Council it is now endorsed by the current Mayor of Brockton, James Harrington. The Project Steering Committee will work closely with the War Memorial Foundation. This War Memorial Restoration Project (WMRP) offers the promise of community-wide support to maintain the primary mandate of the War Memorial Building; to honor the men and women who served our country in time of war. A proposed Veterans Memorial Museum could serve as an interactive, information and education center and could be constructed in order to promote the virtues of Patriotism, Public Service and the Responsibilities of Citizenship. In order to insure greater public and community access and utilization, the War Memorial Building will fulfill a secondary mandate to community enrichment by providing a home to a downtown Performing Arts Center and the Brockton Symphony Orchestra. The Steering Committee for this Project is sponsoring a number of fundraisers including War Memorial Benefit Concerts, the Dedication Walkway, and the Stepping-Stone Initiative. This will involve direct solicitation of business and service organizations in order to fund the renovation and restoration of the exterior masonry, façade and stair treads or "stepping-stones" at the entrance to Brockton's War Memorial Building.
